Please join us for an in-person seminar presentation on corrosion of reinforced concrete structures and the evaluation and design of mitigation systems.
Topics presented include:
Learn about the factors that initiate and support the corrosion process of metals embedded in concrete.
Develop an understanding of corrosion risk, the corrosion process and selection of the appropriate countermeasures during the corrosion cycle.
Introduction to various strategies, techniques and technologies designed to prevent and mitigate corrosion in concrete.
Outline
1. Concrete as an alkaline environment
Discuss the relationship between pH and corrosion rate.
2. Changes caused by carbon dioxide and chlorides
Contamination of concrete by corrosive agents.
3. The corrosion process in concrete – Initiation, Progression and Failure
Discussion of the corrosion cycle.
4. Prevention and Mitigation
Discuss corrosion avoidance vs. mitigation. Understand the corrosion cycle and optimum intervention with the appropriate countermeasures.
5. Available Technologies
Preventive techniques. Mitigation techniques.
Concrete additives and mix designs.
Sealers, barriers, and membranes.
Inhibitors.
Electrochemical techniques – cathodic protection.
6. Quiz – Questions
Drinks, coffee, snacks, and treats will be provided at the seminar. We may organize an informal dinner at a local restaurant after the seminar for any who wish to attend.
