SEAM/ASCE Maine Chapter Joint Meeting: I-295 Bridge Replacement over Veranda Street, Portland

In one weekend, the MaineDOT replaced a 60-year-old structurally deficient bridge, carrying I-295 over Veranda Street in Portland Maine. Work began to remove the existing structure on Friday at 7 p.m. and by Monday at 7 a.m. the new bridge was in place, paved, striped and open to traffic.

To reduce the long-term congestion of a multi-year replacement and increase the safety of the traveling public and workers during construction, the bridge replacement was completed using Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC). The method of ABC selected for this project involved building the upper portion of the new bridge to the side of the existing one on temporary supports. At the same time, the new bridge foundations were built beneath the existing bridge. Then, while the roadways were closed, the new bridge was lifted and driven into place using a self-propelled modular transporter (SPMT).
