SEAM Meeting: Transmission Tower Replacement Project, James River

Please join us for a presentation by Ronald Kief, P.E., on Thursday, February 21th at Buck’s Naked BBQ in Freeport.

The presentation will be on the Line 567 Tower Replacement Project. Ron Kief is an engineer with the Construction Structures Group for Cianbro Inc., where he works out of Ricker’s Wharf in Portland, Maine. As a member of the Construction Structures Group, Mr. Kief has been involved in design of temporary structures and Heavy Lift planning since 2009.

In the Autumn of 2017, CIANBRO undertook an unprecedented project as a subcontractor to PARR Electric. The Line 567 replacement for Dominion Power in Virginia consisted of numerous aspects, but the main thrust of CIANBRO’s portion of the project consisted of the demolition and replacement of two 430 foot tall transmission towers on the James River in Virginia.

To prosecute this work, a very large variable counterweight crane, the Manitowoc MLC650, was mounted on a 132 x 132 x 10 sectional barge. The main boom of the MLC650 was 459 feet long, with a 25 foot extended upper boom point to accommodate the very tall picks. This was the minimum that was required to handle the tallest sections of the towers. To this day, this was the largest barge mounted crane that Cianbro has ever assembled for any project. Many technical and logistical problems had to be overcome for the successful completion of the line 567 tower replacement project.

If you are a fan of Heavy Lifts and REALLY big equipment, you will not want to miss this presentation.
