SEAM Seminar, CRSI: Time Saving Design Aids and Pile Caps

SEAM will be hosting a seminar to be put on by Mike Mota, Vice President of Engineering at the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute. The presentation will include two separate portions:

Design of Pile Caps (2 hours)
This presentation provides an overview of the new CRSI Pile Cap Design Guide The guide has been developed as a stand-alone publication intended to provide the practicing engineer with a detailed overview of pile cap design, detailing, and analysis methodologies that represent the current state of practice in the industry and meet the latest codes and standards including the 2012 International Building Code (IBC) and ACI 318-14. The guide follows the long-established tradition of providing complete, tabulated designs of common reinforced concrete structural members. The tabulated designs are for normally encountered conditions and include axial and lateral loads.

Time Savings Design Aids (2 hours)
Presents practicing engineers with timesaving analysis, design, and detailing methods of primary framing members of a reinforced concrete building. Revised and updated to ACI 318-14, it incorporates seismic and wind load provisions to comply with the International Building Code (2015 IBC). All equations, design aids, graphs, and code requirements have been updated to the current codes. Expanded illustrations of the theory and fundamentals and new timesaving design aids were added to include a wider range of concrete strengths. Also contains a new chapter on sustainable design.

SEAM Meeting: Epoxy Uses in Construction Joints and Joint Sealants – Their Use and Design

SEAM will be hosting a seminar to be put on by Mr. David Mastay, Senior Project Sales Representative for the Sika Corporation. The presentation will run approximately two hours and will be comprised of:

  • Epoxy Uses in Construction – Areas of focus include crack repair, overlays, coatings, anchoring, structural strengthening epoxies, segmental bridge adhesives, and epoxy grouts
  • Joints & Joint Sealants: Their Use and Design – Topics include adhesive systems, their use and design with the latest urethane and silicone technology; non-sag sealants for vertical, horizontal control and expansion joints. Joint design and troubleshooting problems in the field will also be discussed.

David Mastay has over 16 years’ experience with Sika Corporation. He has a diverse background in the use or mortars, grouts, sealants, structural strengthening, traffic membranes, façade coatings, epoxies, seamless flooring and liquid applied roofing. David currently sits on the Board of Directors for the Connecticut Chapter of ICRI and is active in the Construction Specifications Institute. His primary focus has been on servicing the refurbishment, bonding and sealing aspects of Ports, Piers, Dams, Roads, Bridges & Highways, Building Facades, Parking Garages, Water & WWTP’s above and below grade waterproofing and building envelope designs.

September Tour of Auburn Concrete

SEAM has arranged for a tour with Auburn Concrete at their Auburn facility. Tour will include both a tour of the concrete batch plant and their lab facility. On hand will be two representatives from BASF / Master Builders that will discuss trends in admixtures and answer any admixture questions you may have. Please arrive with steel toed shoes and eye protection. Following the tour, a social time and dinner will be held at DaVinci’s Eatery.

PRESENTER: David W. Fowler, PhD, P.E.

Dr. David W. Fowler, P.E., is a University Distinguished Teaching Professor and the Joe J. King Chair in Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin where he teaches courses in forensic engineering, structures and materials. His research has been in the areas of concrete-polymer materials, forensic engineering, concrete materials, wood structures, aggregates in concrete, and specialty concretes. He has served as president of the International Congress of Polymers in Concrete, member of the ACI Board, and member and chair of numerous committees in ASCE, ACI and TRB. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. His consulting is in the area of forensic investigations related to wood structures, concrete foundations and structures, and concrete materials. His daughter and her husband, Teresa and David Price, have their own structural consulting firm in North Yarmouth.
