SEAM Meeting: Replacement of I-91 Rockingham, VT Bridges

Please join us for a presentation by Thomas French, P.E., on Thursday, July 14th at TIQA in Portland. Thomas French, PE is a Transportation Department Manager for HDR, Inc. He is responsible for Civil, Structural, Maritime and Environment staff in New England. Tom has spent 28 years on the inspection, analysis, design, project management and construction of bridge, highway, drainage, civil/site and miscellaneous building projects throughout the country. He has been the lead design engineer on over 200 projects during his career as a designer for the NHDOT, as a design consultant, and as the engineering manager for a precast concrete company. Tom has spent the last 26 years as an EMT and Firefighter serving his hometown, Henniker, where he lives with his wife and two youngest daughters.

This presentation will provide an overview of the replacement of twin four-span steel deck truss bridges carrying I-91 over the Williams River and Green Mountain Railroad in Rockingham, VT. The new bridges are 860-feet long with piers up to 138 feet tall. Each bridge has five girders comprised of seven segments spliced into continuous girders over 850 feet long. With some individual segments weighing over 93 tons, fabrication, delivery, and erection took careful analysis and planning. To accommodate stringent pier slenderness criteria, rotational stiffness of the piers was increased by incorporating two bearings per girder at each pier. This project is the recipient of the prestigious 2021 PCI Design Award for Bridges with Main Span over 150ft and was selected #6 on the Roads& Bridges top 10 Bridge Projects for 2021.

We feel very fortunate to have Tom join us to discuss this innovative project.

SEAM Tour: Back Cove South CSO Storage Facility

Join us for a site tour of the progress at the Back Cove (South) Storage Facility in Portland. Get a close up view of the construction activities for the excavation visible from I-295 at Back Cove. Glen Adams, PE, of Sargent Construction will be providing a site tour of the excavation / new tanks and a discussion of the challenges encountered on this project, with insight from the structural engineer, Woodard and Curran.

Construction of the new storage facility includes multi-level internally braced sheet pile walls to support excavation of depths up to 25 feet below sea level in poor underlying soils including clay and bay mud. Construction of the new tanks includes more than 17,000 yards of cast-in-place concrete that will store over 3.5 million gallons of combined sewer overflow (CSO) collected from three city outfalls and directed to the tanks using 72″ pipelines.

We will meet at the south end parking lot at Baxter Boulevard, adjacent to the project site (across from Hannaford). Hard hat, eye protection, boots and safety vests are required. Steel toe is NOT required.
